What is Mortgage Protection?

Mortgage protection is designed to help protect your home and your loved ones if the unexpected happens.

Depending on the type of cover chosen, it could help reduce or repay your mortgage if you die during the policy term. You may also be able to include critical illness cover, which could provide a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious illness covered by the policy.

The right cover will depend on your mortgage type, outstanding balance, remaining mortgage term, budget and personal circumstances.

Decreasing term assurance - DTA Life Cover

Image

Decreasing Term Assurance, often called DTA life cover, is life insurance where the amount of cover reduces over time.
It is often used with a repayment mortgage, where the mortgage balance is expected to reduce during the term.

If you die during the policy term, the insurer may pay a lump sum after a valid claim, which could help reduce or repay the remaining mortgage.

DTA cover is usually lower cost than level term cover because the cover amount reduces over time.

Decreasing term cover with Critical Illness Cover

You may be able to add critical illness cover to a decreasing term policy. This means the insurer may pay a lump sum if you die or are diagnosed with a serious illness covered by the policy during the term.

Critical illness claims are only paid if the condition meets the insurer’s policy definition and severity requirements. The policy will usually end after a valid claim.
